LintonBergsen:

Why silence is your secret weapon for success. I am your host, Linton Bergsen, and today we are going to dive into a topic that I sincerely believe is very often overlooked in the noise of this modern world in which we live, with social media and everything else that we are involved in Why Silence Is Your Secret Weapon for Success and can actually give you a slight edge that you may not be aware of. Let me ask you a question. Contemplate on this for a moment, when was the last time you truly experienced silence? Now, I'm not just talking about the absence of noise, but an actual moment in time where you allowed your mind to settle, your thoughts to pause and your senses, which is very important to reset, because we live in a world, as we both know, obsessed with hustle, constant ongoing communication, ongoing, relentless productivity, where silence is definitely not the norm and can honestly feel uncomfortable, I'm sure you are aware of that, even threatening at times, but let me make a suggestion to you. I'm going to suggest that silence is not just a break from the world and the chaos of the world, but it is, in fact, a powerful tool that you can use to propel you toward your greatest achievements. I would, in fact, call it an underestimated superpower. There is science behind silence. Research has shown that silence just isn't relaxing, it's absolutely transformative. That's what we're looking for when we embark upon getting involved using silence as a weapon for success.

LintonBergsen:

Silence can do many different things. Right now, I'm going to give you four areas of your life that silence can affect profoundly. Number one it can boost creativity. It allows your brain to create new connections. If you take moments of silence during the day and you walk away from a situation, sometimes you may go for a walk in nature. Or if you're at work, you just take a break at lunchtime and an idea comes to you, a solution to a problem that you were looking for. You may have experienced that in the shower, for example. You're thinking about an idea, a situation and something comes to you. Because you're allowing that space, that silence, to work for you productively, to give you an edge while you just relax taking a shower.

LintonBergsen:

Number two silence helps your health. It can help you reduce stress and lower your cortisol levels. Very, very important to begin to use silence, to decompress. In moments of silence, to take a deep breath, to become aware of your state of mind, become mindful, even if it's just for two minutes during the day, you will be able to reap the benefits of what silence brings to you even just for a little while at a time, because you and I can definitely use anything to help us reduce our stress. Number three is interesting because I don't think a lot of people always realize this, but silence can help you enhance your memory and learning because it's giving your mind space to process information. You can't just keep cramming your mind full of information. There has to be specific moments of silence, downtime and quiet to process the information that you are now learning and you are committing to memory, because if you don't allow that space and that time, you get overloaded. So take periods of silence to help your learning process, enhance your memory and once again be more relaxed about what it is that you're learning, that is new, and that doesn't just apply to learning new software or something like that. It also applies to being in new relationships with people, because you're still learning personalities, you're still learning how to work with people, and that applies personally and professionally.

LintonBergsen:

Number four is improved decision making. Silence definitely helps you with improved decision making. Why? Because it is helping you to be in tune with your intuition, which the self-realized individual is always trying to do. I mention developing intuition in many of the episodes because the self-realized individual understands that is the cornerstone of a successful life developed intuition, listening to the inner voice, in moments of silence in moments of solitude you are able to tune into that still small voice that can guide you into a more creative as we mentioned earlier decision-making process, combined with reduced stress and allowing space for you to process information. Combining all of these together, you'll definitely make better decisions. When you think about some of the world's most successful people visionaries, artists, leaders they swear by moments of solitude and quiet reflection because they use silence, which you can use as well as an important reset button in your life, personally and professionally, as a way to access deeper insights and clarity, that you could not receive in any other way. For example Steve Jobs in founding Apple talks a lot about self actualization and how he used intuition a lot in his decision-making processes to come up with the right solutions that he was looking for as he developed the company ongoing. He used the term self-actualization. Self-actualization and self-realization both have in common the important concept of listening to yourself and developing once again that intuition which is honed in silence. I mentioned at the very beginning of the episode, at the very beginning of the episode, silence giving you a slight edge, a superpower.

LintonBergsen:

Let's take a look at silence as a strategy. Sometimes we don't think of it that way and how it can in fact give you a competitive edge. And here's where it gets really interesting. We live in a culture today where everyone is basically shouting to be heard, but those who master silence really do stand out. That is why silence can be your secret weapon in three different areas that I'm going to give you that can impact your life personally and professionally. Number one in negotiations, pausing before you respond gives you the ability to give a more confident and thoughtful response to what is being said than if you just react without that pause, that critical moment of silence. Why? Because it gives you a moment to digest to what is being presented and said and you are able to respond and not react, which is a subtle but critical difference between a positive negotiation and a negative one. Number two in your own personal leadership and leadership in general, leaders who listen more than they speak build trust and respect, because when you are listening more than you speak, you are effectively in silence, absorbing what is being said, not just by the words, but what is being truly communicated by that individual, from the meaning behind the words. And when you listen to people and they truly feel heard by you, you will build trust and respect with them and they will build trust and respect with

LintonBergsen:

Number three problem solving, which can be in the same category as creativity. The best ideas that you will ever have mentioned a little earlier emerge in the quiet moments between distractions. I use the word distractions on purpose, because it is so easy for you and I to get distracted and influenced by things that are not going to help us problem solve the right way. Make sure you don't get distracted by negative people, negative influences, naysayers, social media likes and dislikes and everything else that we can be distracted by when you are problem solving. You really want to harness the power of silence. Why silence is your secret weapon for success is because you know how to harness its power. I am going to give you some practical ways how to harness that power and make silence work for you. So here are some actionable strategies that you can use.

LintonBergsen:

Number one you can start your day and I would strongly suggest this with just five minutes of silence. Make that a habit no cell phone, no music, just you and your thoughts. It will change your life. Number two practice every day as a habit mindful listening In conversations. Focus truly on hearing the other person, without planning your response. Number three schedule. Make it an important point to schedule downtime. You can call it white space, wherever you would like to call it in your calendar, where you block out time for reflection, even if it's just for a few minutes. Sp end some time in silence. You can harness that power of introspection and reflection to discover what it is you would like to do on going in a positive way about the situations and circumstances you find yourself in currently it doesn't have to be a long period of silence, down time, white space, whatever you'd like to call it, but do schedule it so that you have that time set aside on a regular basis.

LintonBergsen:

Number four whenever you can embrace silent walks in nature, it will change your life. I mentioned this in many different episodes because it does have a profound effect upon your well-being and your state of mind, your mental health. Leave your headphones at home. Don't walk around with your headphones plugged into your ears. Enjoy the sounds of nature and let your mind wander. Just be free, just roam free in the recesses of your mind and allow things to come to you, percolate up within you and let that still small voice, that intuitive voice, the spiritual part of you, the God consciousness, the cosmic consciousness, whatever you want to call it let that begin to communicate with you and guide you in a more prominent and meaningful way in your life ongoing. Number five is very underestimated, but powerful, very powerful.

LintonBergsen:

Use silence as a response. In tense situations a pause can be more powerful than words and it also gives you the opportunity to think before you speak, because once you've spoken, you can't take the words back, and silence is a powerful response and sometimes it speaks much louder than words. Just the look that you give someone, without any words, can be extremely powerful. In order to have silence work effectively in your life and have it as a secret weapon for your success. I would strongly suggest to you. There is a part of us that sometimes has to overcome the fear of silence, because silence can be very uncomfortable. It can bring up thoughts and feelings that we'd rather not deal with. We would rather avoid. But that is exactly why silence is so powerful. When you begin to lean into the silence, you confront your inner world, you gain greater self-awareness and also something that is underestimated you build resilience. And if you want to discover more about building resilience, I talk about that in episode 96, Discover the Power of Resilience. I suggest it's very important to acknowledge that growth doesn't happen in the comfort zone. It never does. It happens in the quiet moments when you're willing to listen to yourself. The introspection and the downtime gives you that ability.

LintonBergsen:

I'm going to give you a challenge for this week. That is not difficult, but I hope that you find time to implement it. Carve out 10 minutes each day for intentional silence. No distractions, no multitasking, just you, your breath and you in the present moment. Notice what comes up, notice how you feel afterward and, if you're feeling bold, bring a moment of silence into your next conversation or meeting and see what shifts in that moment that you have had the courage to choose silence.

LintonBergsen:

Silence is not emptiness. It is filled with potential. It's the space where your next big idea, guided by intuition, the inner voice, your next big breakthrough, your next level of achievement and success is waiting to be discovered, released and unleashed into the world by you. And that is when you will realize for yourself why silence is your secret weapon for your success. I sincerely appreciate you listening to the podcast.
