The Alchemy of Struggle: Transforming Pain Into Power
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
What if struggle isn’t proof you’re failing, but a sacred turning point calling you into a truer life? In this episode of Self Realized: Shatter Your Limits with Linton Bergsen, we open that door by exploring the alchemy of struggle and a clear five‑step arc—Notice, Name, Allow, Inquire, Align—to help you transform pain into power without bypassing what’s real.
We work on three layers of struggle: the outer circumstances you’re facing, the emotions moving through your body, and the soul‑level meaning beneath the mind’s fear stories. You’ll hear how control, comparison, and shame quietly drain your life force, and how presence, nervous‑system awareness, and self‑compassion can become antidotes that restore courage and clarity in any season of your life.
You’ll learn simple, repeatable practices you can use today: a 30‑second conscious pause to interrupt anxious spirals, one honest truth to reclaim your voice, and one aligned act that matches your values more than your fear. You’ll also be guided through a short inner practice and future‑self visualization designed to soften resistance, invite grace, and rebuild trust in your intuition so you can move from victim consciousness to creator consciousness.
By the end, struggle stands in a new light—not as the end of your story, but as the pressure that cracks what’s false so what’s true can finally breathe. If this message resonates, follow Self Realized: Shatter Your Limits with Linton Bergsen, share this episode with someone who needs it, and leave a rating or review so more people worldwide can find tools to turn pain into purpose, struggle into strength, and self‑doubt into self‑realization.

Framing Struggle As Initiation
Linton BergsenAre you walking through life right now with something heavy on your heart? This episode is just for you. Stay with me because by the end, you won't just see your struggle differently. You will know how to use it as the key that opens the doorway to your strength, your purpose, and your freedom. Welcome to episode number 129 of Self Realized, Shatter Your Limits podcast I am Linton Bergsen. Today we are going straight into the heart of something most of us try to avoid. Struggle. We are going to discover the alchemy of struggle and know how to transform pain into power. In today's episode, we are not just looking at the idea of struggle, but the real thing. The sleepless nights, the tight chest, the questions you don't tell anyone you're asking. The ones that you keep to yourself, hidden from view for whatever reason that you may have. What people may think of you, how could you have got yourself in this position in the first place? Today, right now, in this episode, I am inviting you to see your struggle not as a punishment from life, but as a spiritual initiation, a point of alchemy where pain can become power and where your spirit is actually trying to wake you up. Most of us learn early that struggle means we're doing something wrong. If you're struggling, you may have failed. If you're in pain, you may be off your path. Struggle is often the moment when your soul and your old identity collide. The life you have outgrown is bumping up against the life you are being called into. What you call struggle is often your spirit refusing to live small anymore. You were born to shine brightly, not to be a dim light in the background. Sometimes we meet situations in life and the ego says, This shouldn't be happening. The soul whispers, this cannot keep happening. And in that tension between what you are clinging to and what you are being invited to step into is where alchemy becomes possible. So today I want to walk with you through that alchemy, how to meet your struggle spiritually and practically, how to receive the message inside the pain, and how to let this season become the doorway to who you really are. As you listen, I invite you to hold one struggle you're having right now in your heart. Don't sanitize it and don't minimize it. Let it be here with you because we are going to work with it together. Starting out with looking at the three layers of struggle. To begin, it helps to see that struggle has layers. I want to offer you three simple layers that you can recognize. Number one, outer struggle, the circumstance. Number two, inner struggle, the emotional body, and number three, soul struggle, the deeper meaning and calling. Let's walk through each one. The outer struggle is what's happening in your visible life, the relationship ending, the money not stretching, the diagnosis, the career that doesn't fit anymore. These are facts on the ground. From a spiritual view, they are not punishments. They are simply the circumstances that you have right now giving you the life lessons that you need, provided by source, God, whatever you call it. And you can use these life lessons, these circumstances, as opportunities for growth and discovery, personally and professionally. The outer struggle is the life lesson you have been assigned right now. Let's look now at the inner struggle, the emotional body. The emotions the outer circumstances are bringing up that you are feeling. For example, they may be fear, grief, anger, shame, simply just numbing out. This is the energy moving through your nervous system. Spiritually, this is sacred ground. Why? Because the emotions you are trying to avoid are often the very doors where the divine cosmic consciousness is closest to opening a new pathway for you to walk. It is where grace wants to enter. But because we have been taught to judge and suppress our emotions, to run or not feel uncomfortable, we end up struggling with the struggle. We say, I shouldn't feel this, or this is too much for me to bear. And that second layer of resistance is what really exhausts us, fighting fear, too scared to step into the unknown, where all growth and possibilities occur. Not acknowledging grief or truly knowing how to deal with it, not letting go of anger, feeling shame, when we simply need to acknowledge who and what we are, maybe what we've done, and move on to the next chapter in our life with the lessons learned. We say, I shouldn't feel this. And it's in the not letting go of everything that doesn't serve us anymore, struggling to let go when we know we should move on. It is that resistance that really exhausts us. Contemplate on this for a moment. Letting go of anything can be the biggest struggle of all. The self-realized individual realizes that in letting go, new doors open that they can experience for greater self-development, self-awareness, and self-realization, they practice the art of letting go, choosing not to hold on to the illusion of control, so they can experience true peace and power, which I discuss in more detail in the previous episode, number 128. Struggle number three is soul struggle, and that is the deepest layer. The struggle between your mind and your soul. The meaning your mind is assigning to situations and circumstances can be this. This means I am not enough. This means I am alone. This means life doesn't support me anymore. But beneath those fearful stories is your soul's knowing. I am being redirected, I am being invited to grow. Something much more authentic is trying to emerge. Alchemy begins when you can see there is a circumstance, there is an emotion, and a soul struggle occurring. And I am the awareness holding all of this. You are not the struggle, you are the one who can choose how to meet it. So how does pain actually become power? I'd like to introduce to you now the alchemy arc. I like to think of it as a five-step arc. Number one, notice, number two, name, number three, allow, number four, inquire, and number five, align. Let's explore each spiritually and practically. Number one, notice. First you notice what is going on with you because awareness, self-awareness, is the very first light of consciousness. Most of us stay so busy, so distracted, we never actually acknowledge what we're actually living or going through. Right now, if you can, try and complete this sentence in your mind. At this time of my life, I am struggling with just that, simple, honest, no editing. When you notice without judgment, you step out of autopilot and into presence, the current moment. Presence is where spirit can actually reach you. Having your presence in the present moment means your essence, your spiritual foundation, the presence of who you are is aware of what is going on now in this very present moment in time. Spirit cannot reach you. The God force, cosmic consciousness, Christ consciousness, divine grace, whatever you like to call it in the past or the future. It can help how you feel about those, but it can only affect the present moment now. Contemplate on that for a moment. It will change the way you approach life on a moment-to-moment basis. Second, give your current situation a name. For example, do not say I am in a disaster. Say to yourself, I have the opportunity now to rebuild my life in a way I have never had before. You can name this rebuilding my life. Instead of saying I am afraid, say I have the opportunity to let go of the past and explore what the future has for me now. You can name this exploring new opportunities. And here is an important realization for you. When you name what you are actually feeling, you are able to bring it into the light of your own awareness. How you name it changes how you feel about it, and your self-awareness determines the actions you will take. Spiritually, it's like a confession, not in the religious sense, but in an intimate sense with yourself. You're saying to yourself, This is what's real in me right now. You are acknowledging that. Allow doesn't mean that you enjoy the pain, it means that you stop waging war against your own inner experience. Here is a suggestion if you can, place your hand on your chest and say this to yourself. It's okay for me to feel what I am feeling right now. This is in fact an act of spiritual humility. You are saying, I surrender my demand that life and my emotions be different in this moment. When you allow what you're doing, is you create space for grace to move through what you're feeling. Instead of bracing and tightening yourself, restricting and creating a dam that cannot allow grace to enter and flow in your life, providing for you that all-important intuitive guidance. I like to use mini mantras, I call them in my life. And you can use the mini mantra, I am allowing space for grace whenever you begin to feel a tightening in your body. It's easy to remember, quick to use, and can create an immediate shift within you. Number four, you inquire. This is where the conversation with your struggle becomes a conversation with your soul, your spirit, your deep inner awareness. You might ask gently, What are you trying to show me? What truth have I been avoiding? Where have I abandoned myself and my values? Instead of why is this happening to me? You begin asking, How is this trying to wake me up? Whether you call it God, source, higher self, spirit, this is where you invite guidance in. You begin to listen beneath the noise of other people's advice or opinions. You begin listening to yourself. Number five, align. This is where the spiritual insight becomes a practical shift. Alignment doesn't always mean a massive life change overnight. It means your next move matches your soul's truth more than it matches your fear. For example, it could be setting a boundary, telling the truth, reaching out for help, resting when you would normally push. In alignment, you stop using your energy to maintain what is false. You start using it to live what is true, your truth. This is where pain makes its transformation into power. I would like to give you now a short inner practice allowing you to experience the taste of this alchemy in your own body. If you are driving or moving, keep your eyes open and simply follow along in your own awareness. Take a slow breath in and out. Gently bring to mind one struggle that you are facing right now at this moment. I'm not asking you to fix it, just let it be here with you. Now quietly say in your mind, right now I am struggling with, and finish that sentence. Notice where that lands in your body. Is it in your chest, your throat, your stomach, your shoulders? Just notice where you are carrying that. Now name one emotion that is present fear, sadness, anger, numbness, whatever is real to you. If you can place a hand over the part of your body that feels most activated, and gently say to yourself, It's okay for you to be here at this time in this part of my body. I'm listening to the emotions and the feelings that you bring up. Take another breath. Now ask this struggle a question. What are you trying to show me? But do not force an answer. Let your soul, your spirit, your deeper inner wisdom answer in its own time. Maybe through a word, an image, or a quiet knowing. When you allow things to percolate, to simmer for a while, just as you would when you are making a meal, you allow the best flavors to come to the surface. In this situation, you are allowing the best answers to rise up within you through the power of your own intuition and the space you have allowed for divine guidance. The journey of the self-realized individual is understanding that everything they need to know is already inside of them. They just consistently improve that knowing. Whatever arises, even if it is just a hint, just say, thank you, I am willing to learn and accept what you are trying to show me. Take one more breath, and when you are ready, gently bring your attention back to this moment. You can do this practice at any time during the day. It doesn't take long, but it recenters you to what's important. The fact that you do have the power to experience alchemy, transforming pain into power at any time of the day or night with a very simple practice. As we begin to meet our struggles differently, some big spiritual blocks can show up. I want to name three control, comparison, and shame. Control says if I can manage everything perfectly, I won't have to feel this. Spiritually, control is the ego trying to play God. The more you cling, the more fragile you feel. True power isn't controlling life, it's about being rooted in who you really are while life moves. Essentially, you are a spiritual being having a human experience. When you understand that, you are locked into the true magic of alchemy, transforming your pain into power. Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can say to yourself is this. I don't know, but I am willing to be shown. Comparison whispers, everyone else is handling life better than you. Look at them. They're not struggling like this, but you never compare your insides to their insides. You are comparing what you see on the outside of their life to what is on the outside of your life. What's going on internally is always very different to what is going on externally. Spirit is not grading you against other people's timelines. The question is not how do I measure up? The question is what is my soul asking of me right now in this season at this time of my life to be and become the very best authentic version of myself. Let us now take a look at shame. Shame says, if people knew what you were really going through, they'd walk away. Shame fuses your identity with your struggle. It says to you, I am my failure, I am my mistake, I am my pain. But from a spiritual lens, you are not your struggle. You are the awareness in which the struggle is appearing. You are the one who can meet it with love. Or with judgment. Every time you choose even a small act of compassion toward yourself, you're choosing your soul, your spiritual experience over shame. That choice is a deeply spiritual one. You never want to be a victim, you want to be a creator. You are connected to the divine source of all creation. Your pure spirit is. There are questions that shrink you and questions that set you free. If you are in a difficult part of your life right now, I want to offer you five questions that can literally shift your state of consciousness. Sit with even one of these questions, and your relationship to your struggle will start to shift. Why? Because you move from victim consciousness, this is happening to me, to a creator consciousness, which the divine can respond to. You affirm I am being invited to respond from who I really am, which is an all-knowing, all-powerful spiritual force, which is the actual true statement of who and what you truly are. I talk more about acting with courage on the spiritual path in episode number one twenty five, awaken your spiritual power for courage, clarity, and purpose. Let us now bring practical spiritual integration and daily alchemy together that can affect your everyday life. The alchemy of struggle doesn't only happen in big breakthroughs, it happens in small, consistent choices. Here are a few ways you can practice this alchemy daily. Number one, a conscious pause. Once a day, when you feel triggered, which we all do, anxious or overwhelmed, pause for just thirty seconds. Take one deep breath and notice what you are feeling. Name it as we mentioned earlier, and say it is okay for me to feel this right now. That small pause interrupts old patterns. It is a disruption to the normal, an open space for your soul to lead instead of react, which is a critical part of your own personal leadership, self-awareness, and self-development. Number two, one honest truth. Every day tell one more truth to yourself or to someone else. Maybe it's I am really not okay. Maybe it's I really need help. Or this no longer feels aligned with my life and my values. Truth is the language of your soul. Every time you speak it, you reclaim a little bit more of your power. Number three, one act of alignment. Each morning ask, what is one small act I can take today that is in alignment with my deepest truth? It could be as simple as resting, saying no, reaching out, making a plan. You do not have to flip your entire life in just one day. But those small acts of alignment repeated over time transform who you become. Number four, remembering presence. A very important spiritual perspective isn't something you add on. It's a way of remembering that you are more, much more, than your thoughts and emotions. A few times a day, simply pause, feel your feet on the ground, notice your breath, and say quietly to yourself, I am here, I am held, I am guided, even if you don't see how yet. That remembrance changes the quality of your struggle from isolation to companionship. You are not alone. The most powerful force in your life you may not be able to see, but you certainly will be able to feel with the spirit inside of you. Part of the alchemy that you possess, transforming any pain into power, is the ability to rewrite your story from broken to being reformed. Let's talk about the story you hold about yourself in relation to struggle. There's a version of your story where struggle proves you're broken, unlucky, or unworthy. But there's another version where struggle is the pressure that reshapes you into someone more awake and more aligned. You are not broken, you are being reformed. The old identity, people pleasing, overperforming, hiding your truth cannot carry you into the next chapter of your life. So life applies pressure. Not to destroy you, but to crack open what isn't real. So what is real can finally breathe. From that view, your struggle is not the end of your story, it is the turning point. I would really like you to hear this in this episode. You are not behind, you are not late, and you certainly have not missed your life. You are in a special chapter where your soul is asking, will you keep abandoning yourself or will you finally come home to who you actually are? And that question, more than the circumstance, is what makes this a sacred moment. Deeply personal to you right now. I would like to invite you at this moment into a short visualization. Again, only if it is safe, you can close your eyes, otherwise, just imagine with me. Take a deep breath in and out. Imagine it's one year from now. The outer circumstances of your life may or may not look dramatically different, but you have learned to meet your struggles in a new way. You no longer abandon yourself at the first sign of pain. You tell the truth sooner, your truth. You listen to your body, you trust your intuition a little bit more for much bigger results. See this future vision of you walking into a room. Notice their posture, notice the calm in their eyes. This is you on the other side of this chapter. Now imagine that version of you stepping toward you now, right in this very moment. They place a hand on your shoulder and say, Thank you for not giving up on us. Thank you for staying. Thank you for listening. Keep going. You are much closer than you think. Take one more breath, and when you are ready, gently come back. As we close today's episode, remember, struggle is not a sign that you're off your path. Often it is proof that you're right on the edge of an old life that can't contain who you are becoming. The invitation is not to glorify pain, but to stop wasting it, to let it teach you, to let it refine you, to let it become the key that opens the doorway to your strength, your purpose, and your freedom. If this episode spoke to you, if you felt seen, if you felt something softened, if a new possibility opened within you, I would love for you to stay connected.
